Close-range effects OS1-128

Hi everyone,

its me again . I’m working with an Ouster OS1-128 and a Lambertian reflection target. Observation: I conducted measurements at various distances and noticed that the target disappears at around 30 cm in Ouster Studio. Interestingly, the data contains signal values, but no valid coordinates (x, y, z) and range. The points are not rendered in 3D space. When I move even closer to the target (less than 30 cm), the target becomes visible again in the viewer.

Settings & Context:

  • Min Range: Set to 0cm.

  • UDP Profile: RNG19_RFL8_SIG16_NIR16

  • Return Order: Nearest to Farthest

  • Target Reflectivity: Tested with 1.4% and 5% (behavior is identical).

  • Note: I am aware of the notice 0x010000a5, which suggests using “Farthest to Nearest” return for this scenario. However, I need “Nearest to Farthest” for my application.

Question: Can someone explain why this behavior occurs at around 30 cm? I don’t understand why signal strength is present but no coordinates are calculated, and why the target becomes visible again at even shorter distances.

Would it be helpful if I share additional metadata from my measurements?

Thanks in advance!
