Using OS Sensors with a Magnetometer/Compass

Some customers are interested in integrating a magnetometer with OS sensors in order to capture compass direction along with sensor data. A common use case would be to improve SLAM/odometry.

  1. Does the sensor provide internal magnetometer readings from its built in IMU?

  2. If using an external magnetometer, is there concern that the magnetic field produced by the motor/other components will interfere with it?

Answer:

  1. Does the sensor provide internal magnetometer readings from its built in IMU?

No. Gen 1 sensors incorporated a magnetometer inside the sensor which may be referenced in early documentation, but the data was never exposed to customers. It was later removed due to the magnetic interference from the motor that made the data unusable.

  1. If using an external magnetometer, is there concern that the magnetic field produced by the motor/other components will interfere with it?

Using an external magnetometer will probably work depending on how far it is mounted from the sensor housing. This would require testing the specific configuration.
